HFA lines

The naked eye will often see lines better than photos – check both photos - in person where you can

Notice lines that are clearly seen when the face is relaxed

And

Notice lines that are clearly seen when the face is animated

DO NOT choose lines that are barely visible

Lines are difficult for students, until they become familiar with rated and non-rated depth. The more examples you collect, the easier you will be able to rate facial lines. Some lines are so common they are never rated no matter how deep. Others are so rare, they are rated even if only feint in their presentation.

Line guide

The following is a guide only. This chart defines lines by type and how much their depth will impact on the rating. Where lines are common, they only rate when they are distinctive. Where they are less common, they will rate even when light

Forehead - common - rate med/deep - photo 9 frown

Crows feet - common - DO NOT RATE

Between eyes - common but always rate (various versions) - photo 8 frown

Under eyes* - occasional - must be UNDER eyes - seen on smiling (mostly) but also non-smiling

Across bridge - occasional - always rate - light/med/deep - photo 8 frown

Cheeks - occasional - always rate - dimple (1 or 2) or multiple lines - seen on smiling (mostly) but also on non-smiling

Nose to mouth** - only rate on NON-SMILING - common when smiling - both sides long (to sides of mouth)

Around mouth - rare - brackets shapes - both sides - often light but still rate - seen on no smile or very slight smile (do not add if part of smile lines on smiling - common)

Mouth corners down - occasional - both sides - rate when medium or long in length - not small lines

*Under eyes

Always check the non-smiling photo first. These lines should be easily visible (not crow’s feet but lines under the eyes). Sometimes you won’t see them on the non-smiling photo but they will be very strong on the smiling photo – rate as yellow 1 point. However, if they are only light on smiling do not rate.

**Nose to mouth

Always check the non-smiling photo first. These lines should extend the whole or almost all the length of the arc between the wings of the nose the corners of the mouth. Everyone has a crease at this point especially when smiling. Occasionally these lines will not appear on the non-smiling photo but will be VERY STRONG in a natural light – rate as blue 1 point. Check many examples to be sure they are different to the average nose to mouth lines seen on smiling.

Forehead

LINES of the FOREHEAD (frown photo or watch with animation in the clinic)

Tips

  • Look at the forehead for wavy or horizontal lines – they may be short or extend the width of the forehead
  • Many people have very light lines that only show when they are talking or animated
  • Very light lines are not rated
  • Some people have no lines when they are still but quite visible lines when they are talking or animated – rate these lines as yellow 1 point
  • Overall, you will see that men have these lines more than women but some women do have these lines and some men don’t have them

Between eyes

LINES BETWEEN THE EYES (frown photo)

Tips

  • Look at the area between the eyes or just above this area
  • You should be able to see the lines easily when the patient frowns
  • You may be able to see them either lightly or even deeply, when they are not frowning
  • If there are no lines showing OR when the patients frowns, the lines are very slight = no rating
  • There are many ways these lines can show – rate by the number of lines rather than the placement, if you see an unusual line or set of lines

Beside eyes

INDENTATION BESIDE THE EYES (front on photo - no smile)

This is a new feature since the Homœopathic Facial Analysis (HFA) book from 2006.

Tips

  • Look at the area beside the eyes
  • If there are two indentations, they should be clearly visible
  • Give two indentations 1 blue point
  • Many people have a slight indentation - if the indentation is slight = non-rating
  • The indentation should sink in beside both eyes

Below eyes

LINES BELOW THE EYES (front on photo – no smile)

Tips

  • Look at the area below and beside the eyes
  • If there are no lines, there is a non-rating
  • It is common to have crow’s feet at the corners of the eyes – either when still or when smiling – this feature is so common (due to the natural lines produced by smiling) that there is no rating
  • Some people have lines that extend BELOW their eyes – either vertically down or on an angle – they usually show more when smiling but unless they are very strong on smiling, they should also be seen when still – give 1 yellow point
  • In some people these lines extend to the cheeks. If there is also a cluster of lines on the cheeks give another yellow point for lines on cheeks (see cheek lines for more explanation)

Across bridge

LINES across the BRIDGE (front on - no smile)

Tips

  • Look at the area between the eyes
  • In some people, there is a horizontal line or a few lines – this can be deep or lighter in appearance but should be clearly visible
  • Be careful the line isn’t a mark from wearing glasses
  • Do not choose, unless it is a natural line or lines
  • There may be one line – light or deep – or multiple horizontal lines = 1 blue point

Cheeks

LINES on the CHEEKS (front on photo - no smile)

Tips

  • Look at the cheeks for lines and/or dimples
  • Sometimes the lines only show when smiling but will still rate
  • Dimples can be small and indented or long and linear
  • A deeper vertical line can join with the line of the chin and form a defined chin (another blue point)
    • Fine lines – both sides
    • Dimples – one or two sides
    • Vertical lines – one or two sides

Nose to mouth

LINES from the NOSE TO THE MOUTH (front on photo - no smile)

Tips

  • Look at the area from the base of the nose (wings) down to the mouth
  • Most people have a slight indentation due to the cheeks and this will not rate
  • Some people have a distinctive line that runs in an arc or straight line from the nose to the mouth – these lines will rate as 1 blue point - both sides
  • The lines may almost reach the mouth, reach the mouth, or extend beyond the mouth
  • If they are short (only come halfway) do not rate them
  • If they are only one side do not rate them
  • If the lines are VERY DEEP on the smiling photo but you can’t see them on the non-smiling photo give 1 blue point

Beside mouth

LINES BESIDE THE MOUTH (front on photo - no smile)

Tips

  • Look at the area beside the mouth
  • Some people have lines that look like brackets on one or both sides of their mouth
  • They may be seen either being still or on smiling
  • Rate them as 1 red point from either photo
  • They must be on both sides to rate (making a semi-circular shape)

From mouth down

LINES down from the CORNERS OF THE MOUTH (front on photo - no smile)

Tips

  • Look at the area from the corners of the mouth and under
  • Some people have lines that extend below their mouth downwards
  • The lines must be on BOTH sides to rate
  • The lines might be an arc shape or vertical
  • Very short lines do not rate
